What to do?

If your companion gets lost

First, try to keep calm. If he was frightened by something, it is quite likely that he won’t be far off and is hiding somewhere. Another thing you can do is to go back to the last place you saw him. It will help if you have someone you trust to stay at one place while you go to the other.

Keep the contact phone numbers of your dog’s identification tag and microchip handy and make sure the phones are operative.

Be as quick as you can. Spread the word around. Keep a photo with you, show it and share it. The more people who know about it the better.

The power of social media is incredible!

Report your dog is missing with the Local Police or Civil Guard within forty-eight hours of the time you realized he was missing.

To do this, you’ll need his microchip number. This step is important, as the police might come across your dog while they’re on patrol or someone may notify them that they have seen your pet.

Notify veterinarians, shelters and the Mougá Shelter.

Give them all the information you can. Indicate the dog’s name, description, microchip number as well as the date, time and place where he was lost. That way they’ll be able to tell you if the data match any animal that someone has reported or that might have been picked up.

Some insurance policies cover the expenses incurred in the search, including ads in newspapers or on the radio.

Go for it! Don’t give up!

Remember that microchip ID’s, in addition to being mandatory will help bring your dog home.

If you find a lost or abandoned animal

If the animal cooperates, try to restrain him and never let him out of your sight. It’s quite possible his family will appear soon.

If the animal doesn’t allow anyone to go near him, it’s important to try and keep an eye on him until his family comes to get him.

Don’t take him home! Call 112 so that they can contact the owner and/or advise them to come and pick him up.

To find the dog’s family, it would be very helpful to take a picture of him and upload it to the social media.
